Nowadays , environmental pollution is one of the biggest problems that the world faces. We often talk about the harms of environmental pollution but we still do not know what environmental pollution actually is. Before we can understand how to control environmental impacts caused by various forms of pollution , we must first know what exactly environmental pollution is and where it comes from.
The most serious contamination comes from the air we breath every day. It is called air pollution. Air pollution is generally in the form of gas emitted by factories , vehicles, etc . It releases chemicals into the atmosphere so what we breath is not only the pure air but also the contamination of the air. More and more factories are build and the vehicles circulate nonstop. It is these things that make our environment worse and worse. Also , air pollution from smoke and various chemicals kills 3 millions people in a year. In the United States ,about 3 million tons of toxic chemicals are released into the environment which contribute to cancer, birth defects, immune system defects and many other serious health problems. And it is people are living with these diseases that were caused by air pollution.
The second most serious contamination comes from the water. People call that water pollution. Water pollution occurs anytime these contaminants enter into a water source such as the ocean , rivers , lakes , or ground water. While the government are trying to reduce the increase of water pollution, there are still a lot of people deliberately drop litter in river. Some rivers, especially the rivers in the city are very
polluted by waste water and solid, which runs way from factories, human activities and some activities. One of the impacts is that many fishes have been died and smell is so bad. Oil spills are also another source of water pollution. It drains the ocean of its resources .This makes a big loss of our food. More importantly, people who still use the water from ground water ,for instance well-water may have water poisoning.
The last contamination comes from soil. We call it soil pollution. The soil itself can also become polluted from dangerous materials such as heavy metals , pesticides , herbicides ,landfills. If toxins are spilled on the ground or if an underground storage tank leaks, soil can become contaminated. These contaminated soil are passed on to humans through direct contact or via food and water. Commercial farming is one of the leading causes of soil pollution. More and more farmers use pesticides and herbicides in order to increase productivity , so the soil pollution also increase . Also, increased soil erosion worldwide not only results in more soil being blown but spreading of disease microbes and various toxins as well. It can be said that our health are being threaten .
Environmental pollution is contamination of air, water and land from man-made waste. It is the problem we make ,so we have responsibility to solve . We protect environment , it means that we protect ourselves and probably our next generations .
